Bierne & Tanner Named NEILA All-Academic

NEILA DIVISION II ALL-ACADEMIC TEAM
AMHERST, Mass. – Seniors Mark Beirne (Hooksett, N.H.) and Zach Tanner (Woburn, Mass.) of the Southern New Hampshire University men's lacrosse team were named to the New England Intercollegiate Lacrosse Association (NEILA) Division II All-Academic Team, as the organization announced its annual year-end academic awards.
Beirne and Tanner were two of 15 Division II student-athletes to earn the distinction, which requires nominees to complete their senior seasons, maintain a grade-point average of 3.0 or better on a 4.0 scale, and be a significant enough contributor to his team that he was nominated for All-Conference consideration.
Beirne was a fixture in the Penmen midfield in 2018, as he was one of just three student-athletes to start all 14 games. He finished second on the team in ground balls with 38 and slotted in sixth in points with 16 on nine goals and seven assists. Beirne more than doubled his career production in his final season, as he set new career benchmarks in goals, assists, points, ground balls and caused turnovers (9).
Tanner enjoyed a breakout campaign in his final season in Manchester, as he led the Southern New Hampshire attack with a career-high 38 points on 22 goals and 16 assists. He saw action in all 14 games and registered at least one point in 13 contests with nine multiple point efforts. Tanner tallied at least three points on nine occasions and turned in six-straight games of at least three points from March 24 through April 10, which included two four-point games and a five-goal outburst against Saint Anselm College. He set new career highs in goals, assists, points, man-up goals (5), ground balls (19) and caused turnovers (3) while more than doubling his career point total.
The Penmen finished their 2018 season with an overall mark of 5-9, which included a 3-8 ledger within the confines of the Northeast-10 Conference.
